World Cup: Uzbekistan’s debut ends in 3-1 loss to Colombia

Colombia secured a 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan in their Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Azteca Stadium in Mexico.

Colombia opened the scoring through Daniel Muñoz in the 40th minute. The right-back delivered the finishing touch from inside the box, extending Colombia’s run of never having a goalless World Cup match.

La Tricolor maintained a high-energy approach throughout the first half, creating multiple chances from the wings against a struggling Uzbekistan side.

However, the balance of the match shifted when Uzbekistan scored its first-ever World Cup goal, as Abbosbek Fayzullaev finished off Eldor Shomurodov’s volley in the 60th minute to level the score.

Uzbekistan’s equaliser, however, was short-lived. Luis Díaz restored Colombia’s lead in the 65th minute, surprising the Uzbek defence with a powerful strike that bounced off goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov and into the net.

Uzbekistan continued pressing in search of another equaliser, but Jaminton Campaz sealed the victory for Colombia in the 90+9th minute with a powerful header.

As a result, Colombia moved to the top of Group K, while Uzbekistan dropped to the bottom of the group standings.
