World Cup: Spain overcome Belgium to set up France semifinal

Spain booked their place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Belgium 2-1 at Los Angeles Stadium in the United States, with Mikel Merino scoring another late winner to seal the victory.

Spain took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz. Lamine Yamal beat his defender down the right flank before finding Pedro Porro, whose low cross was met by Dani Olmo. Although Thibaut Courtois made an outstanding save, the rebound fell to Ruiz, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

La Roja looked the more dangerous side for the remainder of the first half and appeared likely to extend their advantage. However, Belgium equalized against the run of play in the 41st minute, handing Spain their first goal conceded at this year's tournament. After Spain failed to clear the ball during sustained Belgian pressure, Timothy Castagne delivered a cross from the right, and Charles De Ketelaere rose ahead of Pau Cubarsí to head past Unai Simón.

The second half developed into a tactical contest, with Spain dominating possession around Belgium's penalty area while the Red Devils defended resolutely. Jérémy Doku worked tirelessly on the left flank, helping substitute Joaquín Seys contain the threat posed by Lamine Yamal.

The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Pau Cubarsí unleashed a powerful strike from 25 yards that Senne Lammens could only parry into the path of Mikel Merino. The Arsenal midfielder reacted first, firing the rebound into the roof of the net to restore Spain's lead.

Merino's late goal secured Spain's place in the World Cup semifinals, where they will face France.
