World Cup: Brazil cruise past Scotland 3-0 to reach knockout stage

Brazil secured their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match on Wednesday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior put Brazil ahead in the seventh minute after taking advantage of an early defensive error by Scotland.

The South Americans appeared to have doubled their lead shortly afterward following another Scottish mistake, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review determined that Vinicius Junior had fouled Jack Hendry while winning possession.

Despite the setback, Vinicius Junior struck again just before halftime. In the third minute of stoppage time, he headed home a cross from Bruno Guimaraes to give Brazil a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into the break.

Scotland attempted to mount a response in the second half, but Brazil remained firmly in control. Their persistent pressure paid off in the 60th minute when Matheus Cunha calmly finished into the net, extending the lead to 3-0 and effectively ending Scotland’s hopes of a comeback.

With the victory, Brazil finished top of Group C and advanced to the Round of 32. Scotland ended the group stage in third place and remains in contention to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, although its fate will depend on the results of matches in the remaining groups.

As things stand, Brazil is set to face Japan in the Round of 32.
