Inventories increased by 1.9 million barrels to around 465.7 million barrels, while market expectations had pointed to a decrease of 1.9 million barrels.
Strategic petroleum reserves, which are excluded from commercial crude stocks, fell by 4.1 million barrels to 405 million barrels, the data revealed.
Over the same period, gasoline inventories dropped by 4.6 million barrels to about 228.4 million barrels.
EIA data showed that US crude oil production declined by 11,000 barrels per day (bpd) at approximately 13.58 million bpd during the week ending April 17.
US crude oil imports increased by 787,000 bpd to around 6.07 million bpd, while exports fell by 427,000 bpd to about 4.79 million bpd over the same period.
In its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) released on April 8, the EIA forecast that US crude oil output would average 13.5 million bpd in 2026.
