Several injured in sword attack at Swedish school

Several people were injured after a person armed with a sword entered Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden, public broadcaster SVT and the municipality said.

Police and emergency services were called to the school at 2:06 p.m. local time (1206 GMT), according to Fagersta Municipality.

The municipality said the attacker was taken into police custody and that officers were searching the school.

“We have an ongoing operation in the area and that is all we can say at the moment,” police press officer Pelle Vamstad said.

Ambulances, police units, a police helicopter and a police response team were deployed to the scene.

Several schools and facilities in Fagersta were placed under lockdown following the incident, including Olympen, Fagerstahallen, Risbroskolan, Skogsglantan, Bjorksta, Prastkragen and Norrbybacken.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said the government was closely monitoring the situation.

“We have been informed of a serious incident in Fagersta. The police are on site and are working very intensively on the incident. The government is in close contact with the police and is monitoring developments on an ongoing basis,” he said.

Fagersta Municipality said it would hold a press conference to provide further details.
