Russia blocks WhatsApp after YouTube ban

Russia has blocked access to the messaging platform WhatsApp following earlier restrictions on YouTube, according to the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, according to media reports.

Russian media reported that WhatsApp’s domain was removed from the DNS system managed by Roskomnadzor. As a result, internet providers in Russia can no longer match the service’s web address to its IP address, effectively making the platform inaccessible without the use of a VPN.

Reports also indicate that WhatsApp has been removed from the records of Russia’s National Domain Name System. Domains previously associated with whatsapp.com and web.whatsapp.com have reportedly been deleted from the database. However, the technical domain whatsapp.net and the short-link domain wa.me remain listed in the system.

Earlier, the Center stated that the move to block WhatsApp is intended to push users toward Max, a Russian messaging application described as fully transparent to domestic security services. While authorities present the measure as an effort to “protect citizens’ security,” critics argue it enables comprehensive state oversight of communications.

Russian authorities had previously restricted access to both Telegram and WhatsApp in temporarily occupied Crimea, where residents were reportedly encouraged to install the Max messaging service instead.

The country’s largest telecom provider, Volna, said it was complying with an order from Roskomnadzor that applies to subscribers of all operators and providers across what officials describe as the “territory of Russia.”

In addition to the messaging restrictions, Russia is reportedly preparing to introduce digital registration requirements for children. Under the proposed system, parents may be required to inform telecom operators if a SIM card is given to a child. The data would then be entered into a state monitoring system, allowing authorities to identify underage mobile users.
