Peru extends emergency state in 41 districts after heavy rains

Peru has extended a state of emergency for 60 days in 41 districts across 11 regions to continue responding to damage caused by recent heavy rains, the presidency said Friday, according to Xinhua.

The extension, approved by supreme decree and published in the official gazette El Peruano, will take effect on June 1.

The affected districts are located in the regions of Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Junin, Lima and Pasco.

According to the National Institute of Civil Defense, pending tasks include clearing rivers and ravines and setting up temporary shelters for affected residents.

Rescue, cleanup and protection work will be financed through the budgets of the institutions involved, without requiring additional funds from the public treasury, the decree said.

Peru frequently experiences sudden, devastating bouts of heavy rain, flooding, and landslides linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
