Iran fires ballistic missiles at US base in Jordan after four-day truce

Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles toward a US military base in Jordan on Tuesday in what US Central Command (CENTCOM) described as an "attempted surprise attack," according to Axios journalist Barak Ravid.

All of the missiles were intercepted, CENTCOM said in a statement.

This marks Iran's first ballistic missile attack against a US base in the region since President Trump paused strikes against Iran on Friday to give diplomacy another chance.

The attack threatens to unravel the fragile pause and could force Trump to decide whether to resume military action.

"At 5:45 p.m. ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness," CENTCOM later said in a post on X.

Earlier this year, on February 28, the US and Israel launched operations against Iran. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding to halt combat operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. However, on July 8, the US accused Iran of violating terms related to the Strait of Hormuz and resumed large-scale strikes, prompting Iran to retaliate against American infrastructure in the region.

On July 25, US President Donald Trump ordered the military to suspend attacks on Iran, leading to an informal ceasefire until the latest escalation.
