From Caspian Energy to Middle Corridor: Azerbaijan–Kazakhstan partnership grows

According to “Stabil.az”, the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yermek Kosherbayev, and the Minister of Transport, Nurlan Sauranbayev, to Azerbaijan on April 8, as well as the topics discussed during the talks held in Baku, serve as a clear example of this positive dynamic. The Kazakh delegation, which was first received by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, also held a number of other meetings during its visit.

During the meeting with the Kazakh ministers, President Ilham Aliyev expressed satisfaction that bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are developing in the spirit of cooperation and brotherhood. He noted that mutual visits of heads of state, the discussions held during these visits, the decisions adopted, as well as the visits of delegations at various levels from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan and from Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan, have brought the two peoples and countries closer together and strengthened the potential for mutual activity.

The President also emphasized that relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are successfully developing in many fields, including political, economic, transport, logistics, investment, energy, green energy, and other areas, and stressed that there are favorable opportunities for further expansion of cooperation.

It should be noted that relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have historically been shaped by common cultural, ethnic, and political ties, and in the modern era these relations have reached the level of strategic partnership. Both states play an important role within the Turkic world and pursue an active policy aimed at deepening regional cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. Since then, relations have developed steadily on the basis of mutual trust and cooperation. Political dialogue between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan is maintained at a high level, with regular meetings held at the level of heads of state. During these meetings, the expansion of cooperation in the fields of economy, energy, transport, and security is discussed. Both countries also support each other on international platforms and act in accordance with shared interests.

One of the key pillars of Azerbaijan–Kazakhstan relations is economic cooperation, with particular emphasis on the energy sector. As Azerbaijan is located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea and Kazakhstan on the eastern coast, both countries play significant transit and production roles in the export of energy resources to global markets. Part of Kazakh oil is transported to international markets through Azerbaijani infrastructure. In this context, the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline holds special importance.

Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in the field of transport and logistics is also developing rapidly. In particular, the role of both countries is growing within the framework of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor). This route serves as an alternative trade link between China and Europe and has become increasingly relevant in recent years amid changing geopolitical conditions. Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are investing in port infrastructure and railway networks to improve the efficiency of this corridor. The Baku International Sea Trade Port and the Port of Aktau serve as important transit hubs in this regard.

Humanitarian and cultural ties also hold an important place in Azerbaijan–Kazakhstan relations. Both nations share common Turkic roots as well as linguistic and cultural similarities. This closeness encourages cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture. Student exchange programs, joint scientific projects, and cultural events further strengthen these ties. In addition, cultural days of each country are organized in the other, contributing to deeper mutual understanding between the peoples.

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan also closely cooperate within international organizations. In particular, both countries take an active stance within the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and contribute to strengthening its activities. Their shared positions in other international organizations also reflect the strategic nature of their bilateral relations.

In recent years, Azerbaijan–Kazakhstan cooperation has gained further importance amid regional and global challenges. Issues such as energy security, alternative transport routes, and economic diversification remain key priorities for both countries. In this regard, their partnership is significant not only bilaterally, but also for broader regional stability and development.

Looking ahead, it can be stated that relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are expected to expand further. There is significant potential for cooperation, particularly in the fields of green energy, the digital economy, and innovation. Both countries have shown interest in implementing new joint projects in these directions.
