EU summons Russian envoy over drone incidents

The European External Action Service (EEAS) on Monday, July 28, summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires ad interim to the European Union following a violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones and a strike on Latvia's honorary consulate in Ukraine.

The announcement was made by Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for the EU's foreign policy service, during a briefing in Brussels.

"Today, we summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires ad interim to the EEAS," El Anouni said, noting that the Russian representative was presented with a strong protest over the "deliberate violation of Romania's airspace by Russian drones."

He said such actions constitute a "serious escalation" and pose a threat to the security of EU citizens, regional stability, and international peace.

Brussels also reiterated its "full solidarity and support" for Romania and Latvia.

El Anouni added that the EU's foreign policy service will continue supporting Ukraine while increasing pressure on Moscow. He also recalled that EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has already presented a new proposal aimed at further strengthening the bloc's sanctions regime against Russia.
