Bayern edge Real Madrid in thriller to reach Champions League semis

The second leg at the Allianz Arena was a thrilling contest, with Real Madrid going ahead just 34 seconds in when Arda Guler capitalised on a misplaced Manuel Neuer pass. Bayern quickly responded as Aleksandar Pavlovic levelled from a corner, before Guler struck again from a free-kick that Neuer failed to keep out.

Harry Kane restored Bayern’s advantage in the tie, but Kylian Mbappe brought Real back into the contest before half-time, making it 3–2 on the night and 4–4 on aggregate.

The match remained evenly poised until the closing stages, when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Bayern then took full advantage, with Luis Diaz scoring from distance via a deflection to put the German side ahead.

In stoppage time, Michael Olise sealed the victory with a superb curling strike, confirming Bayern’s place in the last four and ending Real Madrid’s hopes of another comeback.

Tempers flared after the final whistle, with Guler shown a straight red card following an altercation with the referee.

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany praised his side’s resilience, noting that while the performance was not perfect, they managed to control the second half and secure the win.

Real Madrid’s defeat marks a disappointing end to their European campaign, as they also face a trophyless season, with Barcelona leading La Liga and an early Copa del Rey exit already confirmed.
