Azerbaijan–Latvia relations enter new development stage

According to "Stabil.az", the main part of the discussions during the meetings was focused on economic and trade relations between the two countries.

Speaking at the forum, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that opportunities for cooperation in the field of agriculture were also discussed.

He stated: "Taking into account that more than 40% of our population lives in rural areas, and this infrastructure has been created, as well as business opportunities in the regions. Of course, they are different from business opportunities in the capital. Therefore, agriculture, tourism, and water management—all these are projects which state and private companies are implementing in Azerbaijan, and I think they will be of interest to Latvian investors as well. Also, the Alat Free Economic Zone provides good services and very investment-friendly legislation, which already allows it to attract foreign investments in substantial volumes. Though today it is clear that attracting foreign investments is not an easy task, I think the legal framework and proximity to the main trading seaports and the railroad make the Alat Free Economic Zone attractive."

Another important topic discussed during the Latvian president’s visit was cooperation in the defense industry. President Ilham Aliyev noted: "One of the issues which we also discussed and probably will also be a potential area of cooperation is the defense industry. We found out that both countries are actively developing their capabilities, and as far as we are concerned, we are already exporting products of our defense industry companies—private and state—to a large number of countries. So joint manufacturing, cooperation, and creating synergy, I think, are also something we can look at. And many others."

At this point, it should be noted that Edgars Rinkēvičs’ official visit to Azerbaijan can be assessed as the beginning of a new stage in the development of relations between the two countries. Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Azerbaijan have developed since the years of independence, based on the principles of stability and mutual respect. This visit is of particular importance in terms of further deepening existing relations and identifying new areas of cooperation.

Both countries uphold respect for international law and the sovereignty of states as one of the key pillars of their foreign policies. In this regard, their similar positions within international organizations further strengthen bilateral cooperation. These relations, which serve as a bridge between Europe and the South Caucasus, are highly significant for regional stability and development.

Economic cooperation remains one of the main directions of bilateral relations. Azerbaijan, with its rich energy resources, plays an important role in ensuring Europe’s energy security. Latvia, in turn, has a well-developed infrastructure in logistics and transport. In this context, both sides are interested in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in energy, transport, and trade sectors.

Particular attention is given to the prospects of cooperation within East–West transport corridors. Creating synergy between Latvia’s port infrastructure and international transport routes passing through Azerbaijan opens new economic opportunities for both countries. In this framework, increasing transit transportation, developing logistics services, and expanding trade turnover are identified as priority areas.

The tourism sector also holds significant potential for cooperation between the two countries. Azerbaijan and Latvia are considered attractive destinations for tourists due to their diverse geographical and cultural characteristics. Increasing mutual tourist flows contributes not only to strengthening economic ties but also to fostering cultural rapprochement.

From a political perspective, the visit is also important in the context of relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan. As a EU member, Latvia can play a bridging role in the development of relations with Azerbaijan. This is particularly evident in areas such as energy security, regional cooperation, and economic integration. In this regard, Edgars Rinkēvičs’ visit opens up new opportunities for both bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

In conclusion, Edgars Rinkēvičs’ visit to Azerbaijan can be assessed as an important milestone in the development of relations between the two countries. The visit creates broad prospects for deepening existing cooperation, identifying new areas of engagement, and strengthening strategic partnership.
