Azerbaijan, Algeria eye expanded economic, energy ties

The first meeting of the Joint Commission of Azerbaijan and Algeria on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation is expected to take place in Baku in the first half of 2027, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy said.

Preparations for the meeting were discussed during a video conference between Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab.

The sides hailed the development of friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Algeria, noting that political dialogue between the countries’ heads of state provides a strong foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation.

The officials highlighted successful cooperation in the energy sector, including within the OPEC+ framework, as well as growing ties between Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and Algeria’s Sonatrach.

The ministers also reviewed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in the energy sector and the work of the group established under the agreement.

In addition to hydrocarbons, the sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in petrochemicals, electricity and renewable energy.

The parties agreed to hold the first meeting of the energy working group before the Joint Commission meeting.
