WHO issues new guidance to combat fungal diseases

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidance to help countries address the growing burden of fungal diseases and antifungal resistance, describing the issue as one of the world's most neglected health threats that remains largely absent from national health strategies, according to the United Nations.

Fungal diseases affect more than 300 million people worldwide each year and are associated with high mortality rates, long-term illness, and significant losses in health and productivity.

These diseases range from common conditions such as ringworm and nail infections to severe invasive infections that can be fatal, particularly among people with weakened immune systems, patients receiving intensive care, people living with HIV, organ transplant recipients, and cancer patients.
