Kazakhstan approves construction of second nuclear power plant

The government of Kazakhstan has approved plans to construct a second nuclear power plant (NPP), according to a resolution signed by Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov on January 26 and published in the country’s official information and legal system of regulatory acts.

The document states that the second NPP is planned to be built in the Zhambyl District, accoring to Interfax.

The resolution entered into force on the day it was signed.

Kazakhstan is planning to develop several nuclear power plants as part of its long-term energy strategy. The first NPP will be constructed by Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom. Construction of the facility is expected to take around 11 years and is scheduled for completion in 2035–2036. Research work near the village of Ulken, located on Lake Balkhash, began on August 8, 2025.

The government has previously indicated that China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) could be selected to build the second and third nuclear power plants in the country.
