Kane brace sends England past DR Congo into World Cup last 16

England came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 at Atlanta Stadium in the United States, securing a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

DR Congo made a dream start to the match, taking the lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga. The forward scored his first international goal after controlling a long pass with his left foot before firing a precise right-footed strike past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at the near post following a swift switch of play.

England struggled to find a response in the opening stages, with their first meaningful opportunity not arriving until the 30th minute. Jude Bellingham connected with a cross from Declan Rice, but DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced an outstanding one-handed save to maintain his side's advantage. It marked England's latest first shot in a FIFA World Cup match since records began in 1966.

DR Congo went into the interval with a deserved lead thanks to Cipenga's early goal and a series of crucial saves by Mpasi. Sebastien Desabre's side, playing with confidence and attacking intent, also came close to extending their advantage when Yoane Wissa struck the post after receiving a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

England's most dangerous moments came from wide positions, with Bellingham denied twice by Mpasi from headers, while Ezri Konsa and Harry Kane also threatened. Despite sustained pressure from the Three Lions, the Leopards held their advantage at half-time.

As England intensified their search for an equaliser in the second half, captain Harry Kane delivered in the 75th minute, powering a header past Mpasi from Anthony Gordon's cross to level the score.

England completed the comeback in the 86th minute. Gordon found Kane on the edge of the penalty area, and the striker shifted onto his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to secure victory for the Three Lions.

DR Congo's World Cup campaign comes to an end, while England advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Mexico.
