Floods in India's Assam affect over 362,000, death toll reaches 11

Flooding in India's northeastern state of Assam has affected more than 362,000 people and claimed 11 lives, Xinhua reported on Tuesday, as the situation remained critical across 16 flood-hit districts.

According to local authorities, one flood-related death was reported in Charaideo district on Tuesday, raising the overall death toll in the state to 11 in less than a month.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said floodwaters have inundated 794 villages and damaged more than 19,099 hectares of agricultural land.

Authorities have established 49 relief camps and 52 distribution centres across the affected districts, providing food and shelter to 44,511 people, including 8,335 children.

Officials said rescue and relief operations have been intensified in the 16 affected districts, where a total of 362,933 residents have been impacted by the floods.

According to state-run broadcaster All India Radio, flooding and erosion have damaged several roads, embankments and other infrastructure.

The broadcaster also reported that urban flooding has affected parts of the Jorhat, Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan districts, impacting nearly 7,800 people.
