Azerbaijani candidate elected member of UN Committee on Rights of the Child

In the elections, held amid strong international competition, candidates from 16 countries competed for nine vacant seats on the Committee, according to Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

Azerbaijan’s nominee, Farid Adilov, a doctoral student at the University of Essex, secured the support of the majority of participating states and was elected in the first round of voting with 130 votes.

A citizen of Azerbaijan will thus serve on the Committee for the first time.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is a key treaty body responsible for monitoring the implementation of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. Composed of 18 independent experts from around the world, the Committee reviews how States Parties fulfill their obligations under the Convention.
