Wildfires force 60,000 to flee homes in Washington state - VIDEO

Around 60,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as massive wildfires continue to rage across Spokane County in the US state of Washington.

According to the Associated Press, the fires have already destroyed at least 600 structures.

The agency reported that the wildfires burning around Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, spread over the weekend across an area of about 21 square kilometres.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said he had discussed the situation with US President Donald Trump and requested additional federal assistance to combat the disaster.

More than a dozen wildfires are burning across Washington State, with the largest—the Old Trails Fire near Spokane—rapidly growing to about 2,500 acres due to strong winds and extreme heat.

“The president has been briefed on the situation and expressed concern for the residents of the state. We will continue working together on providing federal assistance,” Ferguson said.

Earlier, National Guard units were deployed to assist in battling the wildfires. The total area affected by fires across Washington has reached approximately 1,000 square kilometres, while several fire zones, including those near Spokane, remain uncontained.
