Tanker hits mine, catches fire in Strait of Hormuz

A tanker sailing outside Iran’s designated maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz exploded after striking a mine, causing a fire on board, Iran’s IRIB reported, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

The IRGC said the “supertanker” had violated established navigation rules before colliding with two naval mines, which caused a fire to break out.

The IRGC Navy warned that vessels failing to comply with safety regulations in the Strait of Hormuz could face a similar fate.
