Iran warns ships violating Hormuz rules could face seizure

Iran warned Sunday that vessels failing to comply with its transit rules in the Strait of Hormuz could face fines, detention or seizure during subsequent crossings, according to Anadolu Agency.

The warning was issued by Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority in a statement posted on the US social media platform X.

The authority urged companies transporting cargo to or from the Gulf to review an updated list of vessels accused of violations before chartering any ship.

It said vessels cooperating with ships already included on the list would also be added starting Sunday. This would include vessels involved in ship-to-ship cargo transfers, transshipment and similar operations.

Vessels seeking to be removed from the list must submit a formal request explaining the grounds for their removal, the authority added.

Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding in June through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, ending hostilities that began in February and agreeing to pursue negotiations toward a final agreement.

Talks have since stalled amid disputes over the implementation of the memorandum and arrangements for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas exports.
