Iran slams US Treasury chief over sanctions pressure campaign

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei has criticized US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, accusing him of boasting about “strangling” Iran through economic sanctions.

“This claim is clear evidence of America's compulsive addiction to sanctions. Washington resorts to sanctions, and when these restrictions do not work, it simply increases the dose,” Baghaei wrote on X.

He said US sanctions would not weaken Iran.

On August 7, Bessent wrote on X that Iran relies on digital assets and shadow banking networks.

“Economic Fury works. We will continue to increase economic pressure. Whether dollars, rials or cryptocurrency, the Treasury Department will track and destroy the illicit financial networks that keep Iran afloat,” he said.

Economic Fury is a US pressure campaign targeting Iran. The campaign is aimed at reducing Iran's oil exports to zero, cutting off its financial revenues, and targeting covert transit networks and airlines.
