Heatwave leaves more than 3,000 dead across Spain

Spain recorded 3,084 heat-related deaths in May, June and July amid extreme heat, according to Cadena SER.

The radio station reported that the figure was more than double the number recorded during the same period in 2025, when 1,480 heat-related deaths were registered.

The overwhelming majority of the deaths, 3,015, occurred among people aged over 65.

Earlier, Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said July 2026 was among the three hottest months ever recorded in the country. The preliminary average temperature reached 25.7 C, matching the historical record set in 2022. Meanwhile, average daily maximum temperatures were even higher, reaching 34 C.

The situation has been further aggravated by prolonged periods of extreme heat and a lack of rainfall, making July 2026 the driest July Spain has experienced since records began in 1961.
