Chinese surgeons perform world's first bilateral thigh-level leg replantation

Chinese doctors have successfully performed what they say is the world’s first replantation of both lower limbs at the thigh level after the legs were amputated in an industrial accident.

According to Yangtze Evening News, a 51-year-old man surnamed Jiang lost both legs in a factory accident in late 2024.

The operation was performed at Ruixua Orthopedic Hospital in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, and lasted approximately eight hours. Doctors carried out bone grafting and implanted fixation plates into the patient’s femur bones.

More than a year after the surgery, Jiang was initially able to lift his legs and later progressed to standing and walking with the assistance of a walker.

His rehabilitation is continuing.
